The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Thursday return to court to request new directives on the service of the recall petition and accompanying documents on Senator Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) after the lawmaker “refused to accept” service.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity Department, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi.

“Well, the bailiff of the Federal High Court, on behalf of the commission, went to attempt to serve Senator Melaye this afternoon, but Senator Melaye refused to accept service from the bailiff of the court,” Osaze-Uzzi said in a phone interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The lawmaker’s door stayed locked, prompting officials of the commission and the bailiff to drop the bags containing the petition and accompanying documents in front of the office while waiting for him.

With this, the electoral body has no choice but to return to the court, explain what transpired and “probably ask for substituted service”.
