A Monkeypox victim receiving treatment at the quarantine centre in the Niger Delta University Hospital (UNDTH), Okolobiri, Bayelsa state, has killed himself.

According to reports, the victim committed suicide in the early hours of Monday.

While confirming the incident in a statement, the Bayelsa state government said the deceased was among the 21 people with suspected cases of ‘MonkeyPox’ in the state.

The government said the victim did not have any history of mental illness and did not die as a result of the virus.

The statement said the police had been informed of the development and called on residents of the state to maintain good hygiene.
