Brazil football legend Pelé has died at the age of 82, his family announced on Thursday evening.

Pelé, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time and has left a lasting impact on the sport.

Throughout his career, he won three FIFA World Cups with the Brazilian national team and is the all-time leading scorer for his country.

In September 2021, Pelé underwent surgery to remove a tumour on his colon and had been receiving regular treatment from doctors.
