The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has emphasized the crucial role of regional collaboration in propelling Africa’s digital transformation.
The agency’s stance was reaffirmed during the inaugural edition of the GITEX Africa technology exhibition, which brought together key stakeholders, including industry leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and innovators, to discuss and showcase advancements in technology.
As a premier platform for promoting dialogue, innovative solutions, and partnerships, the event aimed to harness the potential of the digital age.
NITDA’s participation focused on fostering collaborations, sharing best practices, and addressing the challenges hindering Africa’s digital growth.
Represented by Dr. Aristotle Onumo, the Director of Corporate Planning and Strategy, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the pivotal role of technology in driving economic growth, job creation, and digital economy development across the continent. Dr. Onumo emphasized the necessity for African countries to invest in digital infrastructure, skills development, and policy reforms to fully leverage the benefits of digital transformation.
During the panel sessions titled “Accelerating Digital Transformation in Africa: Strategies, Challenges, and Opportunities” and “Fast Tracking to an Integrated and Inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure,” Dr. Onumo underscored the importance of collaboration between governments, academia, industry, venture capitalists, and the tech community. He called for the development of common standards and regulations for the digital economy, and encouraged the adoption of digital technologies across all sectors.
Addressing the challenges Africa faces in digital transformation, Dr. Onumo identified inadequate infrastructure, digital skills gaps, and limited digital inclusion as major obstacles.
He emphasized the need for increased investments in human capital development. Despite these hurdles, Dr. Onumo expressed his belief in Africa’s potential to become a major player in the global digital economy.
He urged all stakeholders to work together, seizing the opportunities presented by digital transformation.
NITDA shared its insights and expertise on digital transformation, highlighting the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2021-2024).
Dr. Onumo stated, “Technology is a key driver of economic growth and job creation in Africa. We need to invest in digital infrastructure and develop our own digital strategies to fully reap the benefits of the digital revolution.”
Furthermore, he stressed the significance of public-private partnerships in driving Africa’s digital transformation.
Dr. Onumo emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting Nigeria and Africa’s digital transformation, working collaboratively with governments, the private sector, and the tech community to develop and implement policies, programs, and initiatives that accelerate digital advancement.
He cited the Nigeria Startup Act as an example of successful collaboration that has the potential to make Nigeria a global startup destination.
The panel sessions, featuring experts and representatives from governments, businesses, and the tech community across Africa, witnessed vibrant discussions and productive exchanges.
Participants unanimously agreed that digital transformation is vital for Africa’s economic development.
