Retired General Lucky Irabor, the former Chief of Defence Staff, stated that he is leaving the military in a more capable state to confront adversaries compared to when he assumed the position.

He made these remarks at a ceremony held in his honor in Abuja, where he acknowledged the challenges posed by Nigeria’s large and diverse nature.

General Irabor emphasized that ensuring national security in a country like Nigeria is a difficult but not impossible task.

In 2021, the security situation was complex, but the government, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), other security agencies, and key stakeholders, undertook various measures to strengthen the national security architecture and fulfill essential security functions.

General Irabor confidently stated that the armed forces of Nigeria have grown bigger, stronger, and more capable under his leadership, enabling them to fulfill their constitutional mandate and national security functions effectively.

Notably, the military made significant progress in countering terrorism, piracy, insurgency, sea robberies, vandalism of critical national assets, kidnappings, and providing military assistance in civil authority situations.

The military worked alongside other security agencies and stakeholders to create a secure environment that promotes law and order, democratic processes, human security, and national development.

General Irabor urged citizens to take pride in the military and refrain from belittling their service, emphasizing that the armed forces represent a source of hope for the country. He called for the nation to recognize and appreciate the contributions of the military to national security, unity, and stability, avoiding any intentional or unintentional disparagement, as they stand as a symbol of strength and resilience in a complex world.
