Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, is set to unveil its latest offering, the Threads app, which aims to compete with Twitter.

The app was made available for pre-order on mobile app stores for both iPhone and Android operating systems on Monday.

Listed as “Threads, an Instagram app,” the program is expected to be officially launched in the coming days. On Apple’s app store, it is described as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app.”

The description of the app states, “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.”

This move by Meta follows a period of uncertainty at Twitter since Tesla owner Elon Musk assumed control in October.

Musk has undertaken significant restructuring within the company, leading to the dismissal of numerous employees and introducing subscription paywalls for several features.

In mid-March, Meta announced its plans to develop a new social network, positioning it as a potential competitor to Twitter.

Threads aims to enable users to connect directly with their favorite creators and like-minded individuals, fostering discussions and sharing ideas, opinions, and creativity.

Meta’s vision for the app, as stated in their app store description, is to create a decentralized and independent social network for real-time written messages.

Last week, Twitter faced criticism when Musk revealed that the platform would limit the number of tweets accessible per day for users not subscribed to the platform.

The majority of users, who do not pay for subscriptions, would be limited to viewing only 1,000 tweets daily.

This decision was made to restrict the utilization of the social network’s data by third parties, particularly companies employing artificial intelligence models.
