Buhari Suggests Cabal Influence During Tenure as President

In a recent interview with Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), former President Muhammadu Buhari hinted at the possibility of his eight-year tenure being steered by a powerful political clique commonly referred to as a “cabal.” This admission came after his wife, Aisha Buhari, initially raised concerns about this back in 2016, which Buhari had previously downplayed.

Describing a cabal as a potent group manipulating the country’s affairs for their benefit, Buhari acknowledged the likelihood of losing control to such a faction. When pressed about this during the NTA interview, he reluctantly conceded, stating, “it must have been.”

However, Buhari emphasized that anyone who had violated the law during his administration wouldn’t escape accountability, signaling a willingness to confront any breaches that might have occurred.

Reflecting on his presidency, Buhari highlighted that his focus was primarily on domestic challenges, particularly ensuring the nation’s security. He admitted that grappling with local issues took precedence over engaging extensively with foreign matters during his leadership.

Regarding personal acquisitions during his time in office, Buhari clarified that he deliberately refrained from competing with the affluent class in amassing assets like land, houses, and cars. He attributed this choice to his current “peaceful” post-government life.

Buhari also revealed a cautious approach to certain opportunities presented to him, wary of potential traps set by individuals aiming to exploit compromised situations. He believed that falling into such traps could have been detrimental, allowing exploitation for personal gain at the country’s expense.
