In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has highlighted the crucial role of women in Nigerian politics and governance. During a celebration and lecture organized by the office of the PDP Woman Leader, the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, emphasized the need for greater female involvement in leadership positions.

Represented by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the party, Ambassador Damagum lamented the current state of affairs in the country, suggesting that men have failed in their leadership roles. He asserted that women historically played a significant role in conflict resolution and emphasized the importance of empowering women to take on leadership positions.

The acting Chairman expressed his hope for a future where a woman would ascend to the presidency, stating his willingness to relinquish his own position to facilitate this goal. He underscored the PDP’s commitment to gender equality, noting the party’s practice of allowing women to aspire to any position without financial barriers.

In her address, Hon. Amina Divine Arong, National Woman Leader of the PDP, echoed the call for increased women representation in politics, emphasizing the theme of this year’s celebration: “Inspire Inclusion.” She highlighted the benefits of women’s participation in leadership roles, citing improved performance during times of crisis and the advancement of gender justice and equality.

Despite acknowledging women as powerful agents of change, Arong noted their continued under-representation in politics and other sectors. She emphasized the need for women to be given equal opportunities to contribute to economic, social, and political progress.
