A delegation of Senators from the South-East region has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, they argued that Kanu’s continued incarceration has stifled social and economic activities in the region.

The Senators met with the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and delivered a letter to President Tinubu, requesting Kanu’s release. Abaribe stated that Kanu has agreed to abide by any conditional release and expressed optimism that his freedom would bring peace to the region.

Kanu was arrested in 2021 on terrorism charges and has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since then. The Senators’ appeal comes after numerous calls for his release from various stakeholders, including political and religious leaders.
