The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement until all contentious clauses are addressed.

Okay.ng reports that the agreement, signed with the European Union, has sparked controversy over its gender equality clause, which some lawmakers believe could violate the country’s morals and laws.

The House mandated its relevant committees to investigate the agreement’s provisions, citing concerns over potential violations of Nigeria’s constitution and religious and cultural sensibilities.

The government has maintained that the agreement aims to boost food security and economic development, but critics argue that it may recognize LGBT rights, which are illegal in Nigeria.
