President Bola Tinubu did not extend the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun tenure, despite speculation.

The Police clarified that the President approved the law regulating the position’s permanence.

It will be recalled that Nigeria Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun attained the age of 60 years on September 4, 2024 in which the constitutional age for retirement in the Nigeria Police Force is 60 years or 35 years of service, however the IG’s appointment letter grants a four-year mandate, in line with the Constitution.

There is ongoing controversy over the retirement age of police officers, with a bill to change it yet to be fully implemented.
