A Max Air flight from Maiduguri to Abuja faced a major scare on Wednesday evening when an engine failure, caused by a bird strike, forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m., just 10 minutes into the flight. According to a Max Air staff member, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, resulting in an engine fire.

“Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, which caused one of the engines to catch fire. The pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers,” the staffer said.

The flight was carrying over 100 passengers, including Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, who were left shaken but unharmed.

Upon landing at Maiduguri International Airport, many passengers chose to retrieve their luggage and abandon their travel plans, citing anxiety over the incident.

However, Max Air arranged a replacement aircraft from Kano, allowing those willing to continue their journey, including the Deputy Governor, to reach Abuja later that night.

The damaged aircraft remains grounded at the airport for repairs, while an investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

In a statement to passengers, Max Air commended the pilot and crew for their professionalism during the emergency.

“We remain dedicated to the highest safety standards and thank the crew for their quick thinking and courage in managing the situation,” the airline said.
