The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant.

This follows Okpebholo’s recent election as the Governor of Edo State.

Akpabio announced the decision during a valedictory session held in the Senate chamber to honour Okpebholo. He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the now-vacant seat, ensuring that Edo Central remains represented in the legislative body.

Okpebholo Reflects on His Time in the Senate

During the session, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to his colleagues, highlighting how his tenure in the Senate shaped his approach to governance. Reflecting on his time in the 10th Senate, he praised the camaraderie and support he received from his fellow lawmakers.

“There is no way my story can be told without my distinguished colleagues here. The support, advice, and prayers were overwhelming,” Okpebholo said.

The outgoing senator specifically acknowledged Senate President Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and several other senators for their guidance and encouragement during his time in the chamber.

“My involvement in the business of legislation has helped to drive my passion for good governance, particularly in infrastructure development, security, education, and health, which I will focus on as governor,” he added.

Akpabio Commends Okpebholo’s Contributions

Senate President Akpabio lauded Okpebholo for his contributions to the Senate and urged him to continue his legacy of service as he assumes his new role as governor.

“This is quite emotional for me. Senator Okpebholo has been a dedicated member of this chamber, and his commitment to democracy and good governance is commendable,” Akpabio said.
