MTN Nigeria has emerged as the leader in mobile internet performance for 2024, maintaining its dominant position across various key performance indicators, according to the nPerf Barometer Report on mobile internet connections in Nigeria.

The report, which analyzed data from January 1 to December 31, 2024, highlighted MTN’s superior performance in download and upload speeds, latency, and overall 4G internet performance, outpacing competitors Airtel and Glo.

Key Findings

  • Download Speeds: MTN subscribers enjoyed an average download speed of 17.82 Mbps, significantly higher than Airtel (9.98 Mbps) and Glo (5.66 Mbps).
  • Upload Speeds: MTN also led in upload speeds, with an average of 8.05 Mbps, compared to Airtel’s 4.35 Mbps and Glo’s 3.43 Mbps.
  • Latency: MTN delivered the lowest latency, averaging 79.44 ms, providing a smoother online experience compared to Glo (89.44 ms) and Airtel (119.85 ms).
  • Streaming and Browsing: The network offered the best streaming and browsing experiences, with 72.35% streaming satisfaction and 36.08% browsing performance on average, reinforcing its leadership in user experience.

The findings reflect MTN’s continued investment in infrastructure and technology to improve connectivity and customer satisfaction.

Airtel and Glo’s Performance

While MTN dominated overall, Airtel demonstrated strong performance in browsing and video streaming, making it a competitive player in user experience categories. Glo, on the other hand, showed steady improvements in its overall score, emphasizing efforts to enhance its connectivity and service delivery.

Broader Market Insights

The report underscored the resilience of Nigeria’s mobile internet market, with all operators striving to innovate and improve service delivery. The study also highlighted challenges such as network strain during busy hours, which impacted overall performance across the board.

Methodology

The nPerf Barometer utilized extensive tests conducted during both busy hours (6 PM to 11 PM) and idle hours, ensuring a comprehensive analysis of user experiences. MTN’s performance remained consistent across these periods, reflecting robust network infrastructure.

The report concludes that MTN’s leadership in 2024 sets a benchmark for excellence in Nigeria’s mobile internet landscape. With Airtel and Glo also making significant strides, the competitive environment promises continued advancements in connectivity for Nigerian users.
