The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the renewal of MTN Nigeria’s 800MHz Spectrum band licence.

The renewed licence, which applies to MTN’s first 800MHz Spectrum band (Channel 1), is valid for an additional ten years, effective January 1, 2025, and will expire on December 31, 2034.

This development was disclosed in a notice issued to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) by MTN Nigeria.

The notice, signed by Uto Ukpanah, the company secretary, also confirmed the extension of MTN’s second 800MHz Spectrum band licence (Channel 2).

The Channel 2 licence, initially set to expire on December 31, 2030, has now been extended for an additional four years to align its expiration date with Channel 1. Both licences will now jointly expire on December 31, 2034, a move designed to harmonise their tenure for ease of future renewals.

Reacting to the milestone, Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, expressed satisfaction with the approval, describing it as a pivotal step in sustaining the company’s service delivery.

“We are pleased with the successful renewal and harmonisation of our 800MHz spectrum licences, which lay a solid foundation for the ongoing delivery of 4G services to our customers. This enables us to continue to meet the demand for data and is integral to our broader strategy for enhancing connectivity,” Toriola said.
