Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has reaffirmed his commitment to contesting and winning the 2027 general elections against President Bola Tinubu and other candidates.

Sowore made this declaration on Saturday while speaking with journalists at the 2025 ECOWAS-Abuja International Marathon, where he also participated in the 5km race.

Drawing a parallel between his participation in the marathon and the political journey ahead, he remarked, “The race I truly want to win is coming soon—the one where I’ll compete against Tinubu and others. We’ll see who takes the ultimate prize then.”

Beyond politics, Sowore highlighted the economic potential of sports in Nigeria. He emphasized that investing in athletics and other sporting events could generate substantial revenue, potentially rivaling earnings from the oil sector.

“Sports have the power to transform economies. Instead of relying solely on oil revenues, we should be investing in activities like running, swimming, snooker, javelin, and shot put. Even Winter Olympics—Nigerians can do anything!” he stated.

He commended the participants of the marathon, encouraging the government to prioritize sports development at all levels, from villages to major cities, to create opportunities for young talents and boost national pride.

As Nigeria looks ahead to the next general elections, Sowore’s words reflect not just his political ambition but also his broader vision for a nation that thrives beyond its traditional economic dependencies.
