The ancient city of Oyo was the center of history and tradition today as Oba Abimbola Owoade was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The coronation, held at Oliveth Baptist High School, attracted a distinguished gathering of royal and political figures.

Governor Seyi Makinde presided over the event, leading an array of dignitaries, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi. Also present was the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, along with other notable guests.

Security was a top priority, as the Oyo State Government deployed personnel to strategic locations to maintain order and ensure the success of the historic occasion.

Oba Owoade assumes the revered throne following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83. His ascension follows traditional protocols, including the completion of the 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on March 29. He had previously received his staff and instrument of office at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on January 13.

As the new Alaafin, Oba Owoade is expected to uphold the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people while steering the Oyo Kingdom into a new era.
