Tottenham Hotspur have announced the departure of Ange Postecoglou as head coach, ending his two-year tenure just weeks after leading the club to a historic UEFA Europa League triumph.

Okay.ng reports that Postecoglou, who joined Spurs from Celtic in the summer of 2023, departs following an internal review of the team’s performance.

The club said the decision came after “significant reflection,” despite the Australian manager delivering the club’s first European trophy since 1984.

“Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw,” Spurs said in an official statement. “This achievement will live with us all forever.”

Postecoglou’s tenure began with promise, reintroducing Tottenham’s trademark attacking style and fostering the development of a youthful squad. However, Spurs’ domestic campaign failed to match their European exploits. The club secured just 78 points from 66 league games over two seasons, culminating in what they labelled as their “worst-ever Premier League finish.”

While the Europa League victory in Bilbao was hailed as a historic milestone, the club insisted it could not allow emotions to overshadow long-term strategy.

“At times there were extenuating circumstances—in particular injuries and the decision to prioritise our European campaign,” the statement read. “Whilst winning the Europa League ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

The club’s board unanimously agreed that a new direction was necessary to enable Spurs to compete consistently on multiple fronts.

“This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make,” the club added. “It is not one we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude.”

Spurs also thanked Postecoglou for his contributions, noting the strong foundation he laid for the club’s future and stating that “he will always be welcome back at our home.”

No replacement has been named yet, but the club confirmed that an announcement regarding the next head coach will be made in due course.
