Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, has officially announced his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, concluding a remarkable 20-year tenure at the helm of the company. His retirement will take effect on June 16, 2025, as confirmed by a statement issued by the company secretary, Temitope Hassan, on Wednesday.

Since assuming leadership in 2005, Dangote has been instrumental in transforming Dangote Sugar into Nigeria’s foremost sugar producer. His tenure was marked by significant expansion initiatives and a strong emphasis on corporate governance, which positioned the company as a market leader in the Nigerian sugar industry.

The official statement highlighted, “In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025.”

Under Dangote’s stewardship, the company pursued critical Backward Integration Projects across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States. These projects aimed to boost local sugar production capacity and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on sugar imports, thereby supporting national agricultural development.

Following a thorough selection process, the Board has appointed Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director, as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc. Ekpe, a veteran banker and former group CEO of Ecobank, brings extensive leadership experience across various sectors.

The statement further noted, “Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, Independent Non-Executive Director as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc. effective 16th June 2025.”

The Board expressed confidence in Ekpe’s ability to lead the company into its next phase while extending heartfelt appreciation to Dangote for his exemplary service and dedication. “We welcome Mr. Ekpe to his new role and look forward to the next chapter in our Company’s journey under his leadership. We also express our deep appreciation to Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his years of exemplary service and unwavering commitment to excellence,” the statement concluded.
