Liverpool Football Club has officially secured the transfer of German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a landmark deal worth £116 million. This agreement includes a guaranteed £100 million base fee, with an additional £16 million in performance-related add-ons, which could push the total value beyond the current British transfer record.

As reported on Friday, the add-ons hinge on Liverpool achieving sustained elite-level success, potentially surpassing Chelsea’s £107 million record set by Enzo Fernandez in 2023. The initial fee remains below that, but the full package could rewrite the British transfer history.

Wirtz, who debuted for Leverkusen at just 17, has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances and was instrumental in the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024. Since his national team debut in 2021, he has netted seven goals in 31 caps for Germany.

Liverpool’s new signing is praised for his versatility, capable of playing from the left inside position or centrally. His ability to break defensive lines and deliver precise final passes makes him a valuable addition. Analysts highlight his strong work ethic and skill set, though questions remain about how quickly he will adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physicality.

Before Liverpool’s move, Manchester City showed interest but withdrew due to the high cost, while Bayern Munich was also linked to Wirtz.
