A coalition of Igbo youth groups issued a decisive ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu and the APC on Monday, conditioning their 2027 electoral support on the immediate release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. The declaration came during a mass gathering in Umuahia, where over 300 youths celebrated a recent Kenyan High Court ruling that condemned Kanu’s 2021 extradition as illegal.

Justice E.C. Mwita’s June 26 verdict ordered Kenya’s government to pay Kanu 10 million shillings (approx. $78,000) in damages, citing “gross violations of fundamental rights.” The All Igbo Youth Forum hailed this as proof of Kanu’s innocence, demanding Tinubu act on prior appeals from Igbo leaders like Chief Iwuanyanwu and late statesman Mbazulike Amaechi.

Hon. Chinedum Obilor, the group’s President General, delivered a stark warning: “Our votes in 2027 depend entirely on Kanu’s freedom. Tinubu shouldn’t trust governors’ empty promises—we control the streets, not politicians.” The event culminated in a street march, signaling intensified youth mobilization across the Southeast.
