Kanu Drops Defence Plan, Insists On No-Case Submission in Terrorism Trial

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has abandoned his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Kanu, who is facing seven counts of terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government, appeared before Justice James Omotosho on Monday.

At the previous sitting, Kanu had requested an adjournment after informing the court that his former legal team, led by ex-Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), had not yet handed over his case file.

Okay News reports that Kanu had earlier expressed his readiness to open his defence in a written application to the court, where he indicated plans to call witnesses and requested the issuance of witness summons.

However, during Monday’s resumed hearing, Kanu told the court that after reviewing his case file, he had decided there was no valid charge against him. He argued that the prosecution had failed to establish any case linking him to the alleged offences.

“After carefully studying the evidence and charges, I am convinced there is no case for me to answer,” Kanu stated.

In response, Justice Omotosho directed the IPOB leader to formally file a written address reflecting his position and to serve the prosecution team accordingly.

The trial judge further advised Kanu to consult with experts in criminal law to understand the possible legal consequences of his decision.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses — either based on Kanu’s no-case submission or, if he reconsiders, for him to present his defence.
