Operatives of the Kebbi State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle following a swift operation in the Gwandu Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest came after a 32-year-old man, identified as Umar Mode from Dalijan village, was attacked and robbed along the Gwandu–Birnin Kebbi Road on October 22, 2025.

Confirming the arrest in a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said the victim was ambushed by hoodlums armed with dangerous weapons who inflicted deep cuts on his head before escaping with his unregistered red Boxer motorcycle and Tecno mobile phone.

“Acting on credible intelligence, a combined team of policemen and vigilantes, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Gwandu Division, tracked down and arrested one Basiru Lawali, 22, of Bancho village in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State,” Abubakar said.

According to him, the team recovered an unregistered TVS motorcycle from the suspect, who confessed to the crime and mentioned three accomplices — identified simply as Hassan, Umaru, and Salihu — who are currently on the run.

Abubakar noted that investigations revealed the suspects regularly met at Dodoru Market to plan their criminal activities.

Okay News reports that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.

Commending the Gwandu police unit for their swift response, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, urged the officers to maintain the momentum and intensify patrols along major routes, particularly the Gwandu–Birnin Kebbi axis.

Sani also advised commercial motorcyclists to be cautious and avoid transporting suspicious passengers, especially at night, to prevent similar incidents.

Recent reports indicate that the Kebbi State Police Command has made several arrests linked to motorcycle-related crimes. In previous operations, the police apprehended suspects accused of supplying motorcycles to bandits and recovered stolen motorbikes used in criminal activities across the state.
