FG Recovers Over 90 Mining Sites From Illegal Miners

By Ogungbayi Feyisola Faesol

The Federal Government has reclaimed more than 90 mining sites from illegal operators across the country.

Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, disclosed this in Akure during the Southwest stakeholders’ dialogue themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Dialogue: Assessing Progress, Charting the Future.”

Alake said over 300 illegal miners have been arrested, with 50 currently being prosecuted and more than 20 already convicted. He added that the ministry, working with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has deployed mining marshals to secure mineral-rich zones.

He noted that the sector generated N28 billion in 2024, exceeding its revenue target, and reaffirmed that raw mineral exports would no longer be permitted without local value addition.

The minister warned traditional rulers against aiding illegal miners, stressing that the nation’s resources must not be traded for personal gain.

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke accused federal appointees of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to hijack his administration ahead of the next governorship election.

Adeleke, represented by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, alleged that federal officials had used security agencies to intimidate state officers and interfere with local government administration.

He called for stronger collaboration between state and federal governments, urging unity across political lines to advance regional development.

Adeleke proposed a circular cargo railway project and a network of dry ports for the Southwest, alongside strengthening the Amotekun security outfit.

He also urged leaders to protect democratic values and ensure free, fair elections across the region.
