Nigeria Police Detain Sergeant in Ekiti After Viral Misconduct Video

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ADO-EKITI, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against a police sergeant following the circulation of a viral video showing the officer in uniform displaying conduct “grossly inconsistent” with professional standards.

Okay News reports that the Ekiti State Police Command identified the officer as a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters. He has since been taken into custody at the command headquarters to face an internal inquiry into the incident.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a mandatory medical and psychological evaluation of the sergeant. According to the Force, this assessment is a prerequisite to the disciplinary process to determine if any underlying health or mental concerns contributed to the behavior captured in the footage.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the officer’s actions as a “gross deviation” from the discipline and decorum expected of the force. He reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance policy regarding substance abuse and any conduct that erodes public trust in the uniform.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, stated that the investigation will be thorough and responsible, ensuring that the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force is maintained. The outcome of the disciplinary hearing is expected to be made public once the evaluations and proceedings are concluded.
