The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims by Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation, that his provisional bail was revoked because he attended a political gathering in Kebbi State.
Okay News reports that the Commission described the allegation as false and misleading.
In a statement on Saturday, Dele Oyewale, spokesperson of the EFCC, said the situation had nothing to do with politics and was entirely tied to Malami’s inability to satisfy the terms of his bail.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, though not disposed to joining issues with respect to its operations in the media, is compelled to respond to the patently false claims of a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, about a purported revocation of his bail over attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi,” Oyewale stated.
He clarified that administrative bail is a discretionary measure and not an entitlement.
According to him, Malami was questioned by investigators on 28 November 2025, after which he was granted temporary bail with five conditions that remain unmet.
Oyewale stressed that Malami’s continued stay in EFCC custody is not linked to any political activity, media appearance, or public engagement. He said the only issue is the former minister’s failure to comply with the agreed requirements.
Okay News reports that Malami had alleged his bail was withdrawn due to his presence at a Kebbi political event, a claim the EFCC insists is aimed at misinforming the public.
The Commission reiterated that its work remains guided by the law and that suspects will only be released after satisfying all bail terms while investigations continue.
