The Lagos State Government, which administers Lagos State in southwestern Nigeria and oversees Africa’s most populous city, has announced a temporary traffic diversion ahead of the Seventh Road Edition of the Lagos Autofest 2025 Race scheduled to hold on Sunday, 21 December 2025.
The announcement was made through a traffic advisory issued on Thursday, 18 December 2025, by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the government agency responsible for transport policy and traffic coordination across the state. The advisory was shared via the social media platform X.
According to the ministry, vehicular movement will be restricted around Inner Marina, Marina Road, and Kakawa Street on Lagos Island, the historic commercial district of Lagos, between 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm to allow for the smooth and safe conduct of the race. Okay News reports that the restrictions are part of broader traffic control measures aimed at ensuring public safety during the event.
The advisory stated, “Consequently, there will be a temporary road closure along the race routes; Marina Road (United Bank for Africa area) – Kakawa Street – Balabina Street – Broad Street – Issah Williams Street – Broad Street, and back to Inner Marina, which is the end point of the race.”
It further explained that, “To this end, all junctions and intersections from Marina Road (United Bank for Africa area) to Broad Street (Inner Marina) will be cordoned off with road barriers to restrict access to the main race corridor.”
Motorists were urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with traffic officials who will be deployed along the affected routes. Traffic control will be managed by several agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Nigerian Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Corps, all of which are statutory bodies responsible for traffic regulation, law enforcement, road safety, and community security in Nigeria.
The ministry also advised road users to plan their journeys ahead of time and make use of alternative routes where possible to reduce inconvenience during the race period.
The 2025 Lagos Autofest Race is being organised by the BMW Club of Nigeria, an automobile enthusiasts association, and Work and Play Promotion, an event management company, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government.
Earlier this month, the organisers explained that Marina was selected as the race venue due to its iconic status and historic relevance, noting that the area features globally recognised architectural landmarks that showcase Lagos as a modern model city and an emerging international tourist destination.
