The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the official disaster response body of Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital, has confirmed that no injuries or deaths were recorded after a passenger train collided with a commercial bus on Monday night in Oshodi, a major transport hub within Lagos.
Okay News reports that the incident occurred near the Arena Shopping Complex in Oshodi, Lagos, an area known for heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic, particularly during evening hours.
In a preliminary situation report dated Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, explained that the agency received emergency alerts late on Monday night and immediately activated its emergency response protocols.
“Following distress alerts received on it’s 767/112 Toll Free Emergency Lines at 1953hours, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from it’s Cappa Base, Oshodi,” the agency stated.
According to the report, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency response team arrived at the scene by 8:11 in the evening and found that a train had collided with a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus bearing registration number AGL-671-XR.
“Upon arrival of LRT at the incident scene by 2011hours, it was discovered that a train and a Toyota Hiace bus registration number AGL-671-XR were involved in an accident at the aforementioned location,” the report read.
Providing further clarification on the circumstances surrounding the collision, the agency said preliminary investigations pointed to reckless driving by the bus driver as the immediate cause of the crash.
“Preliminary investigation conducted by the Agency’s Response Team revealed the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Hi-Ace bus driver while driving outside the Arena shopping complex Oshodi, but was hit by an on-coming train which left the bus stuck on the rail tracks,” LASEMA said.
Despite the severity of the collision and the visible damage to the bus, the agency confirmed that no casualties were recorded.
“Fortunately, no casualty nor mortality was recorded as a result of the incident,” the statement added.
However, officials noted that the impact caused extensive damage to the commercial vehicle involved.
“The incident resulted in significant damage to the white Toyota Hi-Ace bus, due to magnitude of the crash,” the agency explained.
Following the collision, emergency responders carried out a detailed risk assessment and implemented safety control measures to prevent secondary accidents and protect commuters in the area.
“LASEMA Response Team conducted appropriate Risk Assessment of the incident scene and activated necessary Safety and Control Measures, to curtail any secondary incident,” the agency said.
Train operations along the affected route were temporarily suspended to allow for safe evacuation of the damaged vehicle.
“Agency’s Response Team passed urgent Information to the railway station to stop train operations pending the evacuation of the accidental bus,” the report stated.
The bus was later removed from the rail tracks and towed to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority yard in Oshodi for further investigation.
“The white Toyota Hi-Ace bus involved in the accident has been extracted from the railway tracks. The recovered accidental white bus has been towed to LASTMA yard in Oshodi,” the agency confirmed.
LASEMA added that the rail line has since been cleared and normal train services restored, marking the successful conclusion of the recovery operation.
“The rail track has been set free and normal activities has been restored. Recovery Operation has been successfully concluded,” the agency said.
Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Cappa Base and officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority participated in the coordinated response.
