The Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State, located in north central Nigeria, has announced a comprehensive ban on the burning of used vehicle tyres during crossover night activities marking the transition into the New Year across the state.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Mohammed, the senior police officer responsible for internal security and law enforcement within the state. The order was communicated through an official statement released on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, in Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa State, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Ramhan Nansel.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across Nasarawa State to ensure strict compliance and enforcement of the ban throughout the New Year celebration period. He warned that any individual found burning tyres would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
Okay News reports that the police leadership described the decision as a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding public and private assets during festive celebrations that typically attract large crowds and heightened activities.
The Commissioner explained that burning tyres poses serious risks, including damage to critical government and privately owned infrastructure, environmental pollution caused by toxic smoke, obstruction of major roads, and threats to public safety. He noted that such activities could hinder the free flow of traffic and create unnecessary emergencies during a period meant for peaceful celebration.
In addition to the enforcement directive, the police authority issued a specific appeal to vulcanisers and automobile repair workers operating across the state. They were instructed to properly dispose of used tyres or remove them from their business premises at the close of work each day to prevent unauthorized access by members of the public.
The police commissioner also called on parents and guardians to take responsibility for the conduct of their children and wards by discouraging them from burning tyres or participating in any unlawful activities during the New Year festivities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nasarawa State Police Command to ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and hitch free New Year celebration for all residents and visitors within the state.
