The federal government has dispatched a technical team to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to investigate the circumstances surrounding how a 300 level Accounting student, Oluchi Anekwe, was electrocuted.

On Wednesday, students of the federal government-owned institution staged a massive protest over the alleged negligence by the university management which allegedly led to Oluchi’s death.

Many other Nigerians, including Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde had similarly joined in the call for a proper response from the federal government.

The technical team from the federal government is led by Engr Peter Ewesor of Nigeria Electricity Management Services Limited, (NEMSL) and will commence its findings on Friday.

A deputy director in charge of press at the power ministry, Mr Timothy Oyedeji said, “At the end of the exercise, the team is expected to find out what actually went wrong and which groups or individuals are culpable after which appropriate sanction will be forwarded to the regulator – Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He added that, “Furthermore, the report will also contain future mitigating measures that would prevent future occurrence of this kind of fatalities.”

The statement further quoted the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali as on behalf of the federal government and the ministry of power, expressing deep regret over the incident

Meanwhile, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended the dean of the school’s Law faculty of Law, Prof Cyril Ndifon, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old 400-level student in his office.

Ndifon’s suspension was announced on Thursday by the panel instituted by the school’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivara Esu.

Ndifon was also briefly arrested and detained by the police on Thursday but subsequently released. He is alleged to have forcefully had his way with the student on August 29.
