Africa’s only female president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius resigned on Saturday following allegations of financial impropriety, her lawyer said.

This is coming days after she refused to back down after the allegations were made.

Gurib-Fakim submitted her resignation in the “national interest,” her lawyer Yousouf Mohamed told reporters, adding that it would take effect on March 23.
