PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the results of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election, citing massive voter disenfranchisement and structural malpractice.
Amaechi’s statement follows the ongoing nationwide collation of the party’s direct primary votes, which saw him face off against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen for the 2027 ticket.
Okay News reports that the former Rivers State governor released an official statement on Tuesday night, characterizing the emerging figures as “concocted” and a total betrayal of the anti-corruption principles the ADC claims to represent.
“I will not accept results from a process that does not reflect the values that the ADC had pledged to uphold,” Amaechi declared. “There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results. Then what makes us different from the others?”
Amaechi fiercely criticized the party leadership for engaging in the very same electoral misconducts—such as vote-buying, result-writing, and rigging—that it routinely condemns in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The internal rebellion introduces a serious fracture into the opposition party’s primary process, which had already seen parallel exercises and conflicting victory declarations across several state chapters, including Ebonyi and Gombe.
