Anambra Governor Soludo Sacks Transition Committee Chairmen Across 21 LGAs

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has dissolved the transition committees across the 21 local government areas of the state. This directive, contained in a letter dated May 17, 2024, takes effect from Monday, May 20, 2024.

The letter, signed by the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Collins Nwabunwanne, instructed the transition committee chairmen to hand over the affairs of their respective local government councils to the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs).

This development comes after a long period of caretaker committees managing the local governments, with the last local government elections held in 2014 during the administration of former Governor Peter Obi. Stakeholders have been urging the conduct of fresh elections, citing the negative impact of the prolonged absence of elected officials on grassroots governance.

During his 2021 governorship campaign and swearing-in ceremony in March 2022, Governor Soludo had promised to conduct local government elections within six months in office. However, this promise is yet to be fulfilled.
