ATBU Postpones Resumption After Protests by Students Over Colleague’s Murder

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Senate of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) has extended the resumption date for the undergraduates at the University to January 7, 2024.

Recall that on Monday the management of ATBU closed down the institution for a period of one week as the students protested the killing of a 500 level student, who was stabbed to death by suspected robbers. The protest subsequently degenerated into breakdown of law and order.

The extension is contained in a statement signed by ATBU Director, Information and Public Relations Alhaji Zailani Bappa. He said in an emergency meeting held at the Senate Chamber in Gubi Campus, the Senate resolved that the one week closure of the university be extended to January 7, 2024.

Bappa explained that the university management earlier announced the closure of the university to all undergraduates for an initial period of one week, from 4th to 10th December, 2023, to avert possible breakdown of law and order on the two campuses of Yelwa and Gubi.

“This followed an upheaval by some aggrieved students after the demise of one of their colleagues who was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants in Yelwan Ngas, a suburb of Bauchi town which led to his untimely death,” Bappa added.
