Bago Renames Niger Airport After Tinubu

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Niger State Government has announced the renaming of the Dr Abubakar Imam International Airport in Minna to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport ahead of its commissioning by the president.

The decision, revealed by the special adviser to the Niger State governor on governance and reform, Dr. Isah Adamu, has left many Nigerians questioning the rationale behind honouring a political figure from another region over a local luminary.

Despite the state government’s assertion that the renaming coincides with the airport’s remodeling and completion, critics argue that the decision overlooks the contributions of Dr. Abubakar Imam, after whom the airport was originally named.

The state Commissioner of Information, Binta Mamman, attempted to justify the move by citing delays in the airport’s federal government-initiated renovation. However, skeptics view the renaming as a calculated political maneuver, particularly considering the timing ahead of the president’s visit.

While Mamman highlighted the airport’s readiness for commissioning and its potential to serve as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, dissenting voices question the priorities of the state government in prioritizing cosmetic changes over substantive development initiatives.

Moreover, the unveiling of various agricultural mechanized equipment and infrastructure projects during the president’s visit has drawn criticism for its perceived alignment with political agendas rather than addressing the pressing needs of Niger State residents.
