Bauchi, NIGERIA — Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). The announcement, made on Saturday, confirms that the Governor has chosen the APM as his “stable platform” to contest the 2027 elections following the collapse of the PDP’s national leadership structure.
The defection follows a week of intense speculation after the Supreme Court nullified the PDP Ibadan Convention, effectively leaving the Tanimu Turaki-led faction without legal standing. While the Governor had initially considered the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and held brief, unsuccessful talks with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) emerged as the final choice to accommodate his entire political structure.
Okay News reports that the move is designed to bypass the “internal sabotage” blamed on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and secure tickets for all his loyalist aspirants before the May 30 primary deadline.
Governor Mohammed reaffirmed that he will no longer pursue the presidency in 2027. Instead, he will lead the APM ticket in Bauchi State as the candidate for the Bauchi South Senatorial seat.
This move is said to allow him focus on maintaining his influence within his home state while supporting a broader national alliance that includes consultations with figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. The Governor’s exit marks the most prominent departure of a political figure from the PDP since the judicial crisis began, signaling a potential mass exodus of supporters into the APM.
