Foiled Plot Uncovered By Security Forces

Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, 6 January 2026. The West African nation’s security ministry revealed that the sophisticated plot was orchestrated by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Damiba, the former military leader ousted by Traoré in September 2022.

“Our intelligence services intercepted this operation in the final hours. They had planned to assassinate the head of state and then strike other key institutions, including civilian personalities,” Mahamadou Sana, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, said in a late-night national broadcast.

Alleged Foreign Funding and Strategic Plans

According to Sana, the conspirators had secured foreign backing, reportedly receiving 70 million CFA francs ($125,000; £92,000) from neighbouring Ivory Coast. The plot reportedly involved targeting Captain Traoré either directly at his residence or using explosives, before striking other senior military and civilian figures.

“The authorities uncovered a leaked video showing the plotters discussing their plans. We are carrying out ongoing investigations and have made several arrests. These individuals will be brought to justice soon,” Sana added, urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid dangerous schemes.

Traoré’s Popular Support Amid Challenges

Since seizing power, Captain Traoré, 37, has faced multiple coup attempts and increasing jihadist violence that has displaced millions across Burkina Faso. Despite criticisms of authoritarianism and media restrictions, he retains strong domestic support and is gaining recognition across Africa for his pan-Africanist vision and critique of Western influence.

Okay News reports that the ongoing internal power struggles and allegations of foreign interference from Ivory Coast could heighten regional tensions further. Lieutenant Colonel Damiba previously led Burkina Faso’s military government from January to September 2022 and is now reportedly in exile in Togo.
