Cape Verde Hold Spain to Historic Draw in World Cup Debut

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ATLANTA, United States — World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match on Monday.

The island nation, ranked 67th in the world by FIFA and making its first appearance at the tournament, frustrated a heavily favoured Spanish side throughout the encounter. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a standout performance, producing a series of crucial saves to deny Spain and secure a memorable point for the Blue Sharks.

Okay News reports that Spain dominated possession and created numerous opportunities, finishing with 27 attempts on goal, but failed to find a breakthrough. Ferran Torres struck the crossbar in the first half, while Mikel Oyarzabal was denied late on by a heroic block from Cape Verde defender Roberto Lopes.

The introduction of teenage star Lamine Yamal after the break added urgency to Spain’s attack, marking his first appearance since recovering from a hamstring injury. However, the Barcelona winger was unable to inspire the decisive moment Spain needed on his World Cup debut.

Cape Verde also threatened on occasion and nearly snatched a dramatic victory in the closing stages, only for Diney Borges’ header from a corner to be saved by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón.

The result represents a landmark achievement for Cape Verde, one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup. The draw leaves them well positioned in Group H and boosts hopes of reaching the knockout stage, while Spain will look to bounce back when they face Saudi Arabia in their next fixture.

For Spain, the stalemate continues a history of difficult World Cup starts. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, the European champions now face increased pressure to secure victories in their remaining group matches to avoid an early setback in their quest for a second world title.
