ABUJA, Nigeria — The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned members of the public about the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications falsely linked to the Bank and designed to compromise personal accounts.
The apex bank said the messages are crafted to mislead recipients, often prompting them to click suspicious links or share sensitive information while spreading false claims about its leadership, licensing, and policy decisions.
Okay News reports that the CBN identified these communications as part of broader cyber fraud attempts aimed at hacking individuals’ personal and financial data.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications purporting to originate from or be associated with the Bank, which are intended to misinform members of the public,” the Bank said.
The Bank advised Nigerians to avoid engaging with unverified links and to refrain from sharing personal information on suspicious platforms, stressing that all official communications should be verified through its website or recognised media channels.
“These fraudulent messages, which prompt recipients to click links, peddle false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues, and are intended to hack personal accounts,” the statement added.
The CBN reiterated that its official website remains www.cbn.gov.ng and urged the public to report any suspected fraudulent activity to law enforcement authorities.
The Bank also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity measures in collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s financial system against digital threats.
“The CBN remains fully committed to safeguarding the Nigerian financial system and continues to strengthen its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect the public against digital fraud,” the statement said.
