GUO Transport Co. has confirmed that one of its drivers was killed after a company vehicle was ambushed by armed robbers along the Okada–Benin Road in Edo State, southern Nigeria, on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
The company said the incident involved a Toyota Hiace bus that was dispatched empty from Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, to Onitsha, a major commercial city in southeastern Nigeria, when it came under attack.
Okay News reports that the company confirmed the death of the driver following the ambush, describing the incident as a tragic loss and raising fresh concerns about security along the highway corridor.
“We regret to confirm that the incident resulted in the loss of our driver. This is a deeply painful loss to the entire GUO family. Our immediate focus is to support his family during this difficult time, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them,” the company said.
The transport firm commended the response of security agencies and government authorities, while calling for stronger measures to address ongoing security challenges on the route.
“We commend the efforts of the relevant security agencies and government authorities, and we respectfully urge intensified action to address the persistent security challenges on this corridor,” the statement added.
GUO Transport also acknowledged public concern following the incident and appealed for privacy for the bereaved family.
“We appreciate the concern and support shown by the public. We kindly request privacy and respect for the bereaved family as they grieve,” the company said.
The attack highlights continued safety concerns on key inter-state routes in southern Nigeria, particularly along the Benin–Ore–Onitsha corridor, which has recorded multiple security incidents in recent years.
