IBADAN, Nigeria – The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes issued a warning on Monday, May 4, 2026, to politicians in Oyo State against disrespecting the traditional stool of the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Okay News reports that Ajeniyi Ajewole, President-General of the council, released a statement through the organization’s Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, cautioning against actions that denigrate the traditional institution.
The council stated that recent actions by political actors crossed acceptable boundaries and posed a risk to the dignity of traditional institutions in the region. “The stool is sacred to the people of Ibadanland and must be treated with the highest respect at all times. Any attempt to denigrate the revered stool will be met with severe consequences,” the council said.
Ajewole stated that the Olubadan remains a unifying father figure to all indigenes and residents of the city, regardless of political affiliation. “All politicians in Oyo are sons and daughters of the Olubadan. They must conduct themselves with decorum, restraint, and absolute respect for the institution,” he said.
The organization addressed incidents of politicians directing curses at opponents and called for maturity in political engagement. “Politics should never be reduced to insults, curses, or hostility. We urge all political actors to rise above bitterness and act in the interest of peace and unity,” Ajewole said.
The council stated that the traditional institution maintains neutrality and respect for all political actors in the state. “The palace can never become any politician’s pawn; it is our symbol of strength and unity. This is the last time such nonsense will be condoned. Let politicians be warned, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. We will defend our tradition, our heritage, and our dignity,” the council said.
