Court Refuses to Transfer Tukur Mamu to Kuje Prison

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a request by Mohammed Mamu to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) to Kuje Prison.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his ruling, cited the issue of incessant jail breaks in prisons as a major reason for opposing Mamu’s transfer request. The Federal Government had also raised concerns about this.

Mamu had claimed that his health was deteriorating and that he needed urgent surgical operations, but Justice Ekwo held that he did not contradict or dispute the averments as required by law, and therefore, the averments were deemed to be true facts.

However, the judge affirmed his earlier order that Mamu be allowed access to his personal physician for medical treatment under the supervision of the DSS.

Mamu, who was arrested in September 2022, is standing trial for alleged relationship with terrorists who attacked Abuja-Kaduna train, has been in DSS custody since March 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
