DAVID LETTERMAN’S LAST DAY ON “LATE SHOW”: A FRENZY OF CELEBRITIES, MEDIA NAVEL-GAZING & ROTTING CAKE

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

David Letterman’s final day as host of a late-night talk show has been a media frenzy.

Reporters camped outside the Ed Sullivan Theater for glimpses of Letterman pals arriving, in hopes some of them might also be making on-air/on stage appearances.
CBS had left blank plans for tonight’s show, and Letterman’s camp this morning tweeted coyly:

Tonight: Surprise guests, a Top Ten list, and free balloons for the kids! #ThanksDave pic.twitter.com/vWgpZHCHlh

— Letterman (@Letterman) May 20, 2015

Breathless reports poured in, of Chris Rock arriving, Steve Martin standing, Tina Fey waving, Alec Baldwin in a crowd, Jim Carrey grinning, Peyton Manning navigating, Julia Louis-Dreyfus beaming, Jerry Seinfeld and wife posting Instagram photos of themselves, Barbara Walters nowhere to be seen but reportedly arrived, the Goodbye Dave cake out of which Bill Murray had popped on last night’s show still rotting in the New York sun, and Late Night staffers receiving special embroidered jackets from Worldwide Pants.

David Letterman’s last show drew big stars … who resisted grabbing a remnant of the cake which
became a launching pad the night before for Bill Murray.

Everyone’s been super secretive about the particulars of Dave’s final show … but we do know Letterman gave the staff special jackets embroidered with a
‘Thank You’ message.

Dave’s sendoff included quite the guest list, not exactly Oprah level … but still not bad…!
