ECOWAS Chairmanship: Tinubu Steps Aside as Tenure Ends

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

President Bola Tinubu has concluded his term as chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government today, Sunday, at the 65th Ordinary Session in Abuja.

Tinubu, who assumed the chairmanship in July 2023, faced significant regional challenges during his tenure, most notably the military coups in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.

His initial hardline approach, which included imposing sanctions on these nations, later evolved into a more diplomatic stance as ECOWAS sought peaceful resolutions to the political crises.

Despite these obstacles, Tinubu’s tenure saw notable achievements. A highlight of his chairmanship was his pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution of Senegal’s 2024 election.

By facilitating dialogue between various stakeholders, Tinubu demonstrated his commitment to upholding democratic principles in the sub-region.
