Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu expressed concerns over six months of unpaid allowances amidst growing tension with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Correspondents Office in Benin, Shaibu highlighted the strain in their relationship, emphasizing the absence of financial allocations to his office.

Admitting to sustaining his office and activities through personal contributions and support from friends, Shaibu credited his continued resilience to goodwill and aid from various quarters.

He passionately acknowledged the role of journalists in his life, recalling how an investigative report by a journalist saved him from peril during the regime of the late Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha, when he was among activists detained.

“My commitment to journalists is unwavering. Your work saved my life, and I am forever grateful,” Shaibu stated, underscoring his dedication to being an ambassador for journalists everywhere.

Expressing his aspirations for good governance and a priority focus on Edo State, Shaibu emphasized the need to bolster institutions. He articulated his political journey driven by the belief in building a fair society through robust institutional frameworks.

“I entered politics to strengthen institutions and foster an egalitarian society. My sacrifices are for an Edo where institutions are strong, capable of curbing excesses and supporting the vulnerable,” Shaibu affirmed.
