Everything You Need to Know About 10th Edition of AMVCA

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is a prestigious award show that celebrates the best of the African film and television industry.

The AMVCA has been running since 2013 and has recognized and honored many talented actors, directors, writers, and producers from across the continent.

The 10th edition of the AMVCA is set to take place later this year, and here are some of the frequently asked questions about it.

What are the new changes in the 10th edition of AMVCA?

The 10th edition of AMVCA will see some changes in the award categories and the voting system. According to the organizers, the changes are meant to align with global trends and benchmarks in the film and television industry. The total number of categories will be reduced from 33 (as of 2023) to 27 categories – 16 non-voting and 9 audience voting categories, and two Recognition Awards – Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards.

The performance awards will also undergo streamlining and will fall under the categories of Best Actor or Best Actress in a Leading or Supporting Role, with winners determined by the jury deviating from the previous audience voting system. The jury, consisting of experienced filmmakers from across the continent and led by a head juror, will determine the winners in the 16 non-voting categories, while the public will determine the winners in the remaining eight audience voting categories. As always, Deloitte will audit the judging process and verify the voting results.

What are the non-voting and audience voting categories?

The non-voting categories include Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design. More categories include Best Writing in a Movie and TV Series, Best Movie and TV Series, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, and Best Sound Design, Editing, and Makeup.

The audience voting categories include Best Scripted and Unscripted Africa Magic Original, Best Digital Content Creator, Best Indigenous Language (West, East, and Southern Africa), Best Multichoice Talent Factory Film, and Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original.

How can I enter the awards?

To enter the awards, all filmmakers must prepare the movie for consideration with online submission. The entry portal opens on January 15, 2024, and closes on February 14, 2024. All films (aired in cinemas or otherwise), made-for-television movies and television series, so long as they meet the terms and conditions, are eligible. The terms and conditions can be found on the AMVCA website.

When and where will the award show take place?

The date and venue of the award show have not been announced yet.
