KANO, Nigeria — Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa of the Federal High Court, Kano Division, has died after reportedly collapsing at his residence in Kano State.
The judge was said to have slumped in his living room on Thursday evening before he was rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Sources within the Federal High Court told reporters that the late jurist was buried on Friday in line with Islamic rites.
“Yes, the judge died Thursday evening and he has been buried. He was very hardworking during his lifetime. You know he handled many high-profile cases and dispensed justice accordingly,” a source familiar with the development said.
The Director of Information for the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, confirmed the incident, stating that Justice Yunusa died at the State Medical Centre in Kano.
Okay News reports that Justice Yunusa presided over several notable cases during his career, including matters arising from the aftermath of the 2023 general elections.
One of the prominent rulings linked to him involved a case concerning Labour Party candidates elected in Kano and other states. The court had clarified at the time that candidates who participated in the Abia State elections, including then Governor-elect Alex Otti, were not parties before it.
In the ruling, Justice Yunusa held that the court lacked jurisdiction to order the issuance or revocation of certificates of return concerning those candidates, advising affected parties to seek redress at the appropriate division of the court.
