FG Begins Payment of Outstanding Scholarship Allowances

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun the disbursement of outstanding 2025 allowances to beneficiaries of the Bilateral Education Agreement Scholarship Programme studying in partner countries.

Okay News reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria has successfully remitted the approved funds to Nigerian embassies and missions for immediate distribution to eligible scholars.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the commencement of payments on Wednesday, May 21, 2026. The ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, confirmed the release of funds in a statement.

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated the disbursed funds represent 50 per cent of the approved outstanding obligations for 2025. He noted that efforts remain ongoing to secure and pay the remaining balance of the funds.

According to Dr. Tunji Alausa, the funds have been received in embassy accounts, and affected missions are expected to begin payments to scholars immediately. He advised students to monitor their accounts for the incoming transfers.

The Bilateral Education Agreement Scholarship Programme provides financial assistance to Nigerian students enrolled in partner nations. The Federal Government of Nigeria has previously stated the programme is discontinued, although it remains responsible for settling outstanding obligations to current beneficiaries.
