FG Set to Implement New ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

By Farouk Mohammed

The Federal Government has announced the implementation of a new ₦70,000 minimum wage, effective from July 29, 2024, following an agreement with the Labour Union, Okay.ng reports.

The decision, which includes the revision of salary structures for lecturers, doctors, military personnel, and other civil servants, was formalized after the government and labour representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), and signed by Eno Olotu, Head of Information and Public Relations, the new wage policy was part of resolutions reached during a committee meeting in Abuja. The statement also noted that the Federal Government had considered the current economic conditions in the country before approving the wage adjustments.

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Didi Walson-Jack, who chaired the committee on civil servant salaries, stated that the new minimum wage would be implemented from July 29, 2024, and that the discontinued wage award should be paid until July 28, 2024.

“Both the Trade Union and the Government sides have agreed on the Consequential Adjustments in Salaries arising from the new minimum wage of ₦70,000,” Walson-Jack said, expressing appreciation for the smooth negotiations.

Walson-Jack described the discussions as one of the shortest and most peaceful wage negotiations, and added that the MoU would now be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.

Comrade Benjamin Anthony, the National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, commended the work of the committee and expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
