Fire Guts Ajah Market in Lagos, Destroys Goods Worth Millions

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

A devastating fire engulfed Ajah Market, near Alesh Bus Stop in Lekki, Lagos, on Sunday evening, causing extensive damage to goods and properties valued at millions of naira.

The blaze reportedly began around 9 pm and swiftly spread, consuming numerous shops filled with combustible materials.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in partnership with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, responded quickly to the emergency.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the response efforts, noting that while the cause of the fire remains unknown, the team successfully prevented the flames from extending to nearby structures.

“The LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “Efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire and salvage remaining valuables.”

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, as the market was closed for Sunday, and no traders were present at the time of the incident.

Investigation into the fire’s origin is ongoing as emergency teams continue to clear the affected areas.
